DUTCH GOLD HAS a pretty bad reputation, but as far as cheap beers go, it’s actually quite palatable. In comparison to similarly priced cans like Bavaria and Tuborg, Dutch Gold might as well be Dom Perignon.
Now, Cork bar Cask have deemed it worthy of being one of the main ingredients in one of their new cocktails, which they call “Sham Juice”.
Behold:
Yes, it is garnished with a candied cigarette. Cask decided to make Sham Juice – their twist on a Radler, by using ingredients that evoke memories of youth. The cocktail is made with Buckfast, scorched pineapple ring cordial with extra malic, Dutch Gold and Peace Park Bitters.
Speaking to DailyEdge.ie, Cask’s manager Andy commented:
The thinking behind Sham Juice is that, as cocktail bartenders – and I definitely include Cask in this generalisation, we take ourselves far too seriously. It’s good to poke fun at yourself. You don’t have to use super expensive ingredients to make a great cocktail.
Sham Juice is actually a banging drink. The cordial is key. Buckfast has a reputation but when you get over that, it’s actually a really tasty modifier.
Andy has been using it as an ingredient in his drink for years. His company Raise the Bar served Buckfast Cocktails at a festival two years ago to thousands of customers who went mad for them.
This isn’t the first time Cask have made a tasty drink with some of the horrifying things people drank as teenagers. On their last cocktail menu, they had a drink called “Donkey’s Bollox”. This was inspired by the very popular act of stealing a tiny measure from each bottle of the various spirits in your parents liquor cabinet.
They made a more sophisticated version of Donkey’s Bollox using more high end spirits than what most teenagers used (which was probably some sickening concoction of Cork Dry Gin, Huzzar and Peach Schnapps), then adding a seasonal syrup and bitters.
When asked if they sell Buckfast by the glass, Andy told us that it’s just a cocktail ingredient, but if somebody really wants a shot of it the bar will be happy to oblige.
Their entire menu is extremely Cork-centric.
As well as Sham Juice, they’ve drinks named Pana Colada and Lamp the Gatt. If you’re interested in checking any of those out, Cask is open on McCurtain Street.
